Adventure calls across the known world. This is the study of Semia: a hearth burning sea-green, the globe of the known world turning on its stand, the faces of its people on the board, and the shelf of collected accounts. I have collected more from this world than from any other. Its people insist on being remarkable.
At the Filstandian Academy - a famed military institution known lovingly as "Mother" by its students - a 16-year-old named Mincel Laust is the best fighter in his class and knows it. His natural combat talents have led him to dismiss classmates who are bookish, graceful, or shy. After a prank goes wrong, he's sentenced to a month of menial chores: cleaning stables, scrubbing kitchens, assisting professors.
Three companions - Edwin, a mage of intellect and power; Verkin, a dwarf of faith and unwavering loyalty; and a fierce huntress whose name carries weight - survive a harrowing beast hunt in the deep caverns. What begins as a tale of adventure and survival becomes something far more complex as bonds of friendship, unspoken love, and secrets held too long reshape the lives of all three.
